The difference between down and down cotton

Feb 06, 2020

Down is poultry feather, and down cotton is a feather-like cotton fiber product.

Down is a fluff that grows on the abdomen of geese and ducks. It is called a feather. Because down is an animal protein fiber, it is more heat-resistant than cotton (vegetable cellulose), and the down-shaped fiber is densely packed with tens of thousands of small triangular pores, which can shrink and expand with temperature changes, and produce a temperature regulation function. Absorb the flowing hot air from the human body, and isolate the cold air from outside. Down is divided into duck down and goose down, but duck down is common in the market.

Down cotton: It is made of ultra-fine fibers of different specifications through a special process. Because it is down-like, it is called down cotton, which fills the gap in the market for alternatives to down. This product is thin, delicate, soft, good thermal insulation, not easy to deform, does not penetrate the silk, has the feeling of down, and its thermal performance exceeds the weight of the same weight of down, and can be widely used in down jackets, ski shirts, winter clothing, etc. Thermal products. Down cotton is divided into two types: one is carded and shaped, feels similar to DuPont cotton, also known as goose down cotton; the second is unshaped, similar to PP cotton, and feels close to down, which is an ideal substitute for down. The so-called down cotton is actually hollow cotton, but it is not real cotton, but filled with hollow polyester. Because the air is insulated, it has a certain degree of warmth.

In terms of comparison, the difference is obvious:

(1) Down is a natural fiber, and down cotton (hollow cotton) is a chemical fiber;

(2) The quality of down is higher, the quality is better, and of course the price is higher;

(3) The down jacket has better thermal performance than down cotton.
